An East Boston teen was held on $1,500 cash bail today on charges she gave birth to a newborn baby boy last month and then tossed him out a window where he was left abandoned crying in a trash-strewn alley.

Eva Flores, 18, was charged in East Boston District Court with reckless endangerment of a child and assault and battery of a child under 14 with injuries, authorities said today. She is also being held on a federal immigration detainer.

Flores is accused of dropping her naked shivering infant 17 feet down into an alley on Saratoga Street between two buildings the night of Sept. 20.

Neighbors heard the infant’s desperate cries that night and sprang into action. The East Boston neighbors followed the tiny wails to the alley below, where they spotted the infant lying amid the trash on a Monday — garbage night.

Police said the child was in good condition that night and the mother, who was located the same night of the incident, was also sent to Massachusetts General Hospital for evaluation. She was taken into custody today “after a thorough and exhaustive investigation,” Boston police said.

Flores is a student at East Boston High School. The federal detainer stems from her arrival illegally from El Salvador two to thee weeks prior from to delivering the baby, officials said.

In court, prosecutors said that Flores named the baby “Angel.”

She is due back in East Boston District Court on Nov. 1.

Child welfare authorities have taken custody of the baby boy.
