  1. Hope

I’m a social worker who encouraged a client whose daughter was traumatized by a white police officer in S.Boston to file a complaint through the ACLUM. Result: more trauma. The ACLU does not have resources to give clients the legal and other support needed to go up against the City of Boston. The City called the young teen”s school repeatedly, apparently trying to discredit the child -these repeated calls were also traumatic. Then charges were filed against the mother, that she had hit another child who waited with her kids at the school bus stop. . This child’s mother was in prison, and my client had actually tried to take this needy kid under her wing, letting her wait with the family, sharing family snacks with her, etc. This appeared to me to be a trumped up charge instigated by the accused policeman, especially since this man turned up in Roxbury Court(a S. Boston policeman) while I was waiting there with the family for one of the hearings. When it appeared that the overworked court appointed attorney was not going to look for witnesses to clear my client, , this impoverished mother had to borrow money for a private attorney, who easily convinced the judge that my client had not been present. In short, dont press charges vs police unless you have a support system, such as a large church or the NAACP behind you, or you have money to hire lawyers to deal with trumped-up charges. The ACLU didn’t want to get involved with the “reprisal” trumped-up charges.
