Mom appeals for help after son’s shooting

The mother of the 4-year-old boy who was shot in the back at Harambee Park broke her silence this afternoon appealing for the public’s help in catching the thugs who hurt her son.

“He’s 4 years old. He’s 4. I’m begging for someone to come froward and say something,” the mother, who would only identify herself as “AJs mom.”

She spoke out this afternoon at Boston Police headquarters.

The boy has had two surgeries and was expected to have a third, possibly today, after the shooting at 9:30 p.m. Monday. Authorities say the child was hit by stray gunfire, and that the incident appeared to be gang-related.

The shooting prompted increased police patrols around the park and a crackdown on unregistered motorbikes — a nuisance that the mayor and police commissioner say contributes to disorder and may help lead investigators to those who commit more serious and violent crimes.
