Saturday December 10th featured film: “THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON”
“The Murder Of Fred Hampton” began as a film portrait of Hampton and the Illinois Black Panther Party. But half way through the shoot, Hampton was murdered by Chicago policeman. In an infamous moment in Chicago history and politics, over a dozen policeman burst into Hampton’s apartment while its occupants were sleeping, killing Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark and brutalizing the other occupants. Filmmakers Mike Gray and Howard Alk arrived a few hours later to shoot film footage of the crime scene that was later used to contradict news reports and police testimony. Recently restored and reworked by Gray, “The Murder Of Fred Hampton” is a chilling slice of American history.
1:00pm SHARP! (doors open at 12:30pm)
Tuesday December 27th featured film: “THE BLACK CANDLE” (in celebrating Kwanzaa)
“The Black Candle” is a landmark, vibrant documentary that uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to celebrate the African-American experience. Narrated by renowned poet Maya Angelou and directed by award-winning author and filmmaker M.K. Asante, Jr., The Black Candle is an extraordinary, inspirational story about the struggle and triumph of African-American family, community, and culture. Filmed across the United States, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, “The Black Candle” is a timely illumination on why the seven principles of Kwanzaa are so important to African-Americans today. The first feature film on Kwanzaa, The Black Candle traces the holiday’s growth out of the Black Power Movement in the 1960’s to its present-day reality as a global, Pan-African holiday embraced by over 40 million celebrants. With vivid cinematography and an all star cast that features the best and brightest from the hip-hop and the civil rights generations, “The Black Candle” is more than a film about a holiday: it’s a celebration of a people!

1. IN THE RED AND BROWN WATER (RBW)
Oya can run faster than anyone, but not fast enough to escape her fate. When pressed to choose between her dying mother and her dreams of escape, she makes a life-changing decision. Her journey from the promise of youth to the complicated yearnings of womanhood is a joyous, raucous, brazenly theatrical experience.

2. THE BROTHERS SIZE (BS/M)
Am I my brother’s keeper? After a homecoming in the bayous of Louisiana, the Size brothers, Ogun and Oshoosi, try to start fresh. This haunting, funny, and heartbreaking tour de force probes sexuality, coming of age, and the bonds of family as the brothers struggle to discover identity and to unearth a new sense of freedom.
MARCUS; OR THE SECRET OF SWEET (BS/M)
Sixteen year-old Marcus is having some startlingly “sweet” dreams that feel more like a bad omen. As the Louisiana air thickens, Marcus begins asking questions about the father he never met, and getting closer to a secret they both share. MARCUS, with its warmth, myth, humor, and Louisiana patois, is a magical coming-of-age story about the storms of sexuality and identity.
