Join a network of one of the most recognized and respected youth organizations in the country through a Commonwealth Corps Service position with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Middlesex County!
The mission of the Commonwealth Corps is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in service to strengthen communities, address unmet community needs, and increase volunteerism. Commonwealth Corps members will serve up to twelve months in full-time or part-time capacities at designated nonprofits and public entities. What they have in common is a desire to put their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Middlesex County provide young people with:
• A safe place to spend time during non-school hours and the summer as an alternative to the streets or being home alone.
• A chance to play, have fun, laugh and learn.
• Opportunities to build new skills that raise each child’s belief that he or she can succeed and receive recognition for personal accomplishments.
• Ongoing relationships with caring adults and connections to new friends in a positive environment, reinforcing a sense of belonging, personal accountability, civility and
civic responsibility.
• Generation-changing programs that support a commitment to learning, positive values, healthy habits and high expectations for success as an adult.
Responsibilities:
• Attend all required corps trainings and service events held by MSA
• Complete minimum of 1,600 hours of service
• Establish and strengthen relationships with key school administrators and personnel to
increase Club staff ability to speak with schools about important information.
• Establish and formalize a communication system with the schools that allows the club to
access youth’s report cards and teachers
• Collect and track club members report cards, performance in club based homework programs,
performance in club based enrichment activities and youth self-assessments to help staff
provide support to members in need and to inform program development to increase
member engagement and skill building.
• Help facilitate Club homework and tutoring programs to serve youth in need of additional
support.
• Recruit and provide support to volunteers to lower adult to youth ratio at the Clubhouse for academic programs, homework help and tutoring.
Time line:
September 10, 2012 – May 10, 2013
Qualifications:
• Massachusetts residency
• 18 years of age or older
• Experience with or interest in volunteerism and community engagement
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
• Minimum of one year of experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of youth aged
6-12.
• High School degree required, some college preferred
