Part-Time MCCC Unit Professional Position
POSITION: Health & Wellness Educator (Health Care Counselor)
POSITION REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Athletics, Health and Wellness
SALARY: $23.79 per hour for 20-30 hours per week
DEPARTMENT: Student Affairs
The Health Educator is a knowledgeable and organized individual with strong communication skills who will work with a variety of students, faculty, staff, and community members in areas related to overall health and wellness. The Health Educator will develop and implement a co-curricular wellness education program and provide oversight of immunization record compliance. The Health Educator will promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health through programming efforts and consulting that encourages others to adopt healthy behaviors with the understanding that such behaviors often lead to stronger morale, better decision making, and greater success. The Health Educator will also ensure compliance with local and federal guidelines around illness and immunization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Support student, faculty, and staff through walk-ins and appointments by answering inquiries about general health-related issues and providing resources in the community.
Provide information on a broad scope of health and wellness related topics through presentations, workshops, literature, etc.
Find services and refer individuals to doctors or other healthcare professionals, internal counseling staff, and other College staff as needed, referring out for all medical questions and procedures.
Monitor self-serve first-aid and over the counter supply distribution.
Plan and implement college-wide activities that promote healthy living.
Activities may include the annual Wellness Expo, Nutrition and Fitness Workshops, group exercise, smoking cessation, meditation sessions and more.
Coordinate regular wellness educational opportunities including CPR classes
Coordinate vaccine clinics, blood drives, and disease screenings periodically.
Collaborate with various departments to reserve space, arrange for set-up, promote and recruit participants.
Investigate the feasibility of and potentially develop a peer educator program.
Ensure compliance with alcohol and drug and other health related regulations.
Prepare reports as required by federal guidelines.
Offer programs and services as required by federal guidelines.
Review and edit letter to students that is circulated annually.
Provide general oversight of immunization record collection and compliance.
Work closely with other Center staff to ensure accurate review and data entry.
Follow up with students to ensure timely submission.
Ensure maintenance of Health Program timelines and records.
Responsible for completing and sending compliance letters to Health Program clinical sites.
Review and follow-up with necessary individuals regarding International Heath records.
Promote the mission of the Center for Health and Wellness.
Organize and conduct classroom visits at various times throughout the year.
Provide oversight for all Center publications including on-line and social media.
Support all Center for Health and Wellness projects and initiatives.
Prepare and distribute educational and informational materials on health issues.
Create and/or purchase ads, pamphlets, and other literature on current topics affecting college students such as smoking, immunization, drug abuse, and AIDS.
Plan and conduct focus groups, forum discussions, panels, and presentations designed to evaluate the College’s student health needs/interests and motivate them to understand health issues and act in ways that promote good health.
Strive to prevent and reduce illnesses by informing the public about the importance of exercise and proper nutrition, how to avoid sexually-transmitted diseases, and other general behaviors that promote wellness.
Participate in the assessment of Center for Health and Wellness program and student learning outcomes.
Create and administer student health surveys periodically.
Develop and utilize existing tools and rubrics for evaluating student health and change related to healthy living.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promote and maintain responsive internal and external community relations.
Perform other related duties as required/assigned.
Participate on the Institutional Wellness Advisory Committee if needed.
Participate on the Student Assessment and Intervention Team if needed.
Requirements:
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or closely related field; with two (2 years of experience and/or training involving nursing,medical care, or wellness in a public health, industrial environment or student affairs area; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Strong understanding of health related issues.
Experience working with college students – sensitive to the developmental needs of college students.
Familiarity and comfort with MS Word.
Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Demonstrated experience in event planning.
Experience in, and/or knowledge of, working with students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with varying physical abilities.
Demonstrated ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
CPR/AED certification
Registered Nurse
