Brief Film Description — This short student film is about a girl who is attempting to learn everything she can about who her deceased father was and what he did for a living. The distance he held from his family always troubled her, and now the only thing left of him is the locked door to his home office, which seems to mock her with it’s mysteriousness. Her quest to find the key and discover what is behind the door takes her on an odd, emotional adventure of self-discovery. She soon learns that nothing is as it seems.

Last semester, my student film “This is a Love story” won the University of Rhode Island Film Competition and was accepted into the Rhode Island International Film Festival. RIIFF is an Academy-Award qualifying festival. I’m continuing to submit that short and I plan to submit “Door of Good Hope” to Film Festivals upon it’s completion in December.

Character Name and description –

* Mother – female 30+ to portray 40-50. Blonde or dirty blonde hair.

—The mother is a cold, disinterested woman who is more concerned with finishing her book than she is with discussing her late husband with her conflicted daughter. One scene (half day of shooting).

* Father- male 30+ to portray late 30’s-50.

—Outdoor scene in the opening of the film, during which the father is playing with his daughter as a little girl. Later in the film there is a flashback scene with several medium length monologues. The father has come to terms with the cards he was dealt but that hasn’t completely eliminated the guilt he feels for not always being there for his daughter. His strong demeanor almost (but not quite) masks the distress inside him. Two scenes (One full day of shooting).

Synopsis:
Cody Griffin is the all-star pitcher for his high school’s baseball team with a 4.0GPA. It’s his senior year and he has caught the attention of Harvard University, his dream school. Cody shares the same struggles as most kids his age: keeping on top of his studies, practicing hard for his sport after school, and applying to colleges. But unlike other 17 year olds, Cody is the stability of his household. Without a father figure around, and with a mother who’s depression and alcoholism keep her from contributing to their family, Cody spends a lot of his time raising his little brother Drew. The responsibility is overwhelming but manageable. However, Drew is getting older and life’s complications are growing. After what is perceived as poor brotherly advice and an incident that results from it at Drew’s elementary school, Cody realizes that the roles of brother and guardian were not meant to clash. Cody’s needs to show the Harvard scout at his big game that he deserves a spot on their team which could help him receive acceptance from the school. Unfortunately, the reality is that he may have his ticket out if his hard work and academic achievements pay off, but there is an uncertainty of what would happen to Drew who is left behind.

Note from the Director:
My name is Ashton Avila, I am from Los Angeles, California, and will be a senior film production student at the University of Rhode Island. This film will be the 5th film that I have produced and the 8th film that I have directed. My short film “If I Only Had A Bicycle..” (2010) was the 2011 winner of the Fred Joyal Film Prize at the University of Rhode Island. You can view my previous work at youtube.com/ashtonavilafilms. Last year I produced and directed a film that I am currently submitting to festivals and I plan on doing the same with this year’s film. I do my best to make sure all cast & crew are well informed about any schedules as soon as possible and run my sets in an organized fashion. I am very excited to start this new project and am looking forward to this year! If you have any questions or concerns at all, feel free to email me. Thank you!
