Former O’Bryant High and current Tilton hoop star Wayne Selden has given a verbal commitment to play for the University of Kansas in the fall of 2013.
Ranked among the top 20 players in virtually every national ranking, Selden narrowed his choices down to Kansas, Syracuse and Florida, according to his AAU coach, Leo Papile of the BABC.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound swingman his varsity career very early on at O’Bryant. He was called up to the varsity as a seventh-grader and spent three years there before transferring to Tilton following his freshman year.
“His first varsity game was in the city playoffs,” said Juan Figueroa, who coached at O’Bryant before leaving for Beaver Country Day. “The next year, he started for us as an eighth grader and you could tell even back then that he was going to be a Division 1 kid. He had an amazing body, great skills and he’s worked very hard to develop his game.”
During that time he joined the BABC program and played a large part in their success on the national scene. Papile has long touted Selden as a player to watch, calling him a “physical marvel”.
“He has a Paul Pierce-type body,” Papile said. “He’s a big kid for a wing, he’s got great strength and explosiveness. I think he’s got an NFL body and that’s the type of thing which separates him from the rest of the field.”
