‘We have to stand up’ Dot crime surge prompts call to action

‘We have to stand up’ Dot crime surge prompts call to action By John Zaremba and Colneth Smiley Jr.  |   Thursday, June 30, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com |  Local Coverage Photo by Mark Garfinkel A Hub preacher is calling on Dorchester residents to rise up and “take back” the streets from gun-toting thugs in the wake of a murder of a family man yesterday and the shooting of a 4-year-old boy earlier this week. The Rev. William E. Dickerson, pastor of the Greater Love Tabernacle Church, said the early-summer violence plaguing the city needs to be stopped. “We have to stand up and take back our community,” Dickerson said. “We’ve seen a better time, and we can see it restored.” He said the mother of the little boy shot Monday night at Harambee Park “is holding up well” as she keeps vigil at the boy’s hospital bedside. “Her main concern is her son getting well,” Dickerson said. The boy is said to be stable at Boston Medical Center after surgery. The boy’s shooting prompted a boost in patrols near the park, as well as a peace rally and a crackdown on unregistered motor bikes. But the violence has yet to ease. Yesterday, 36-year-old Nicholas Trotman was shot about 1:42 a.m. at 45 Olney St., police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A native of Trinidad, Trotman moved to Boston more than 15 years ago to play soccer, his family said. He lived in Dorchester, where he cut hair for a living and had a 13-year-old daughter. “He’s the one to always make everybody laugh, no matter what time it is,” his brother Darren Trotman, 43, said at his aunt’s home in Dorchester, where family and friends gathered. Trotman is the 21st person to be killed in Boston this year. Family said yesterday Trotman was a peaceful, family-oriented man, and they do not believe that his death was gang-related. “We just ask that if anybody knows anything or heard anything that they reach out to the police or to someone that they know,” cousin Philly Laptiste said. “We want to know why, even if it’s the smallest bit of detail.” Meanwhile, police yesterday raided what they called an unauthorized motorbike repair shop at 76 Kingsdale St., where they seized at least 18 motorbikes and an all-terrain vehicle. It was part of the city’s crackdown on illegal bikes linked to Monday night’s shooting. Darryl Smith, the assistant commissioner of Inspectional Services, said the bikes do not appear to be connected to the recent violence, but he did say investigators “are curious as to the ownership of some of the bikes.” At least one was confirmed stolen, police said. “There may be some indication that someone is working on these bikes or that it could be a chop shop for motorbikes,” Boston Police Special Operations Deputy Superintendent Thomas Lee said. The building’s owner was fined $3,400 for violations including illegal the dumping of hazardous material, improper storage of trash, running an illegal nonemergency repair shop, and illegal parking. Neighbors said the resident who ran the alleged enterprise is a “family man” who made minor repairs as a favor, or for a few dollars on the side. They said police are wrong to train their focus on the bikes, a common means of recreation in the neighborhood. Article URL: http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1348855

Cops: Boy shot in back while playing in park with mom

Cops: Boy shot in back while playing in park with mom By O’Ryan Johnson  |   Tuesday, June 28, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com |  Local Coverage Photo by Mark Garfinkel Police swarmed through a traumatized city neighborhood last night, hunting the heartless thugs whose gunplay left a small boy in critical condition, shot in the back as he played with his mother on a warm summer evening at Harambee Playground on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester, authorities said. They were back at it again this morning leafleting the neighborhood scouring for tips. The boy, who cops say is 4 to 6 years old, was rushed to Boston Medical Center’s pediatric emergency unit with critical injuries, police said. Doctors managed to stabilize him last night, police said. The shooting happened at 9:20 p.m. shortly after several gas-powered dirt bikes converged on the area, police said. It was unclear who the intended target of the gunfire was. Police said that after the shooting, the dirt bikers sped off. “This is an outrageous act of violence in a public park,” Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said. “This violence is unacceptable. We have pulled out all the stops in this investigation, and we are doing everything humanly possible to bring the people responsible for this to justice.” Davis said initial indications suggest a gang-related shooting. Mayor Thomas M. Menino, shortly after landing in Washington, D.C., last night for meetings today, was briefed by Davis and said in a statement: “Any gun violence in our city is unacceptable but when it involves a young child you can only feel sadness and anger. With the public’s help we will stop those who want to bring violence to our neighborhoods and I urge anyone with any information to call the police department.” Menino spokeswoman Dot Joyce said the mayor expressed concern for the boy and his family. Boston Police Superintendent Bruce Holloway said cops wanted to question several men who were seen fleeing the scene, one of whom was wearing a white shirt. “This is very serious,” Holloway said. “It’s a young male. It’s the beginning of summer. It’s very important the public step up. This is absolutely not accepted. We are going to pull out all the stops to investigate the case.” A 23-year-old father who declined to give his name out of fear of retaliation said his own young son plays in the same park where the boy was shot. “My son is 4 years old. Something hit me, that could have been my baby boy. It’s dumb, man. It’s dumb,” the man said. “Every time they do this, I think someone else is gonna get (angry) and retaliate. It’s just ongoing retaliation.” Holloway said an adult male who was near the boy was grazed by one of the rounds. The identities of the victims were not released last night. The boy’s mother was at his bedside at the hospital last night. Dozens of cops from the city flooded the area after the shooting as police called for extra manpower to handle the investigation. “I was asleep when it happened,” said a neighbor who declined to give her name this morning. “I thought it was firecrackers. Then I heard people screaming.” “I heard the shooting. It came from the park,” said 20-year-old Kevin Scott, who was standing outside his Talbot Avenue apartment, across the street from the playground. “I seen everybody scattering. I ran behind a car and then ran inside. I hope (the victim) is OK. Some people have no sense. They just shot off in the park with all these people around. It’s the innocent bystanders who get hit all the time.” Police are urging anybody from the public who saw what happened to contact detectives by calling 800-494-8477 or by texting the word “Tips” to CRIME (27463). Cop in Danroy Henry Jr.’s death sues liquor store

Cop in Danroy Henry Jr.’s death sues liquor store By Associated Press  |   Monday, June 27, 2011  |  http://www.bostonherald.com |  Local Coverage WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The police officer who killed a college football player during a disturbance outside a New York bar is suing a liquor store for allegedly helping the student get drunk. A lawyer for Pleasantville Officer Aaron Hess says Danroy Henry Jr.’s Oct. 17 death would not have happened if Henry had been sober. The lawsuit filed last week says the liquor store is liable for the injuries Hess suffered when Henry’s car hit him. An autopsy found the Easton, Mass., student’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit. A grand jury cleared Hess of wrongdoing. The lawsuit says Henry, who was under the drinking age, bought liquor before going to the bar and did not drink at the bar. Hess has acknowledged shooting Henry to stop the car. A call to the liquor store was not answered. Article URL: http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1348319

Police responded to East Cottage and Sumner streets in Dorchester about 9:30 last night and found a male in his early to mid-20s shot with serious injuries, according to officer Eddy Chrispin, a Boston police spokesman. Rich Adams, a security guard at the Tedeschi’s near the scene, said he heard three distinct pops, then a large group of people began gathering. “It’s the summertime,” Adams said. “People are trigger happy and suicidal.” A large area was taped off, as a crime-scene photographer snapped photos near a parked SUV. Meanwhile, a 21-year-old black male was shot to death in Roxbury on Saturday night. Officers responded to the area of Dearborn and Eustis streets at about 11 p.m. The victim took himself to Boston Medical Center after suffering multiple gunshot wounds but died there a short time later. Police have not publicly identified the man because his family has not yet been notified, Chrispin said. Officers have no suspects and asked any witnesses to contact police. They did find at least one bullet near the scene, Chrispin said. “It’s still an active investigation,” Chrispin said. Article URL: http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view.bg?articleid=1348196

Boston police show support in court Watch sentencing of officer’s killer By Ben Wolford Globe Correspondent / June 25, 2011 PROVIDENCE — An army of Boston police officers filed into a courtroom yesterday for the sentencing of a man who drove a car last year at two officers in Rhode Island and who killed a Boston officer in 1993. Officers who shot Manuel DaVeiga cleared

Officers who shot suspect cleared By Travis Andersen Globe Staff / June 25, 2011 A Boston police officer and a state trooper who shot an armed man on a Dorchester street in April last year have been cleared of any wrongdoing, after it was determined that they acted in self-defense and that the victim turned his gun on himself, authorities said yesterday. In a letter yesterday to the heads of State and Boston police, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, whose office investigates all violent deaths in the county including fatal shootings involving police, wrote that responding authorities were justified in shooting the victim, Manuel DaVeiga, 19, who died. “A comprehensive and objective examination of all the evidence in this case revealed that Mr. DaVeiga opened fire on [responding officers and troopers] and, in the ensuing exchange of gunfire, took his own life,’’ Conley wrote. Kill Whitey?!?! – Whitey Bulger Caught

Now that they have finally caught Whitey, Will the Government Kill Whitey? Editors Note: The Blackstonian would like to take this rare opportunity to use the word Whitey as much as possible. Much like newscasters get to smirk when they are covering a story which uses the “N-Word” I would like to thank Whitey for providing us with an opportunity such as this. He is the stuff of legends.  Subject of the Hollywood Movie “Departed”, focus of multiple books and hundreds of articles across the country, many written by Boston Columnist/Radio Personality Howie Carr;  Famed Irish Mob Boss Whitey Bulger, brother of William “Billy” Bulger (who was once one of the most powerful politicians on the Boston scene) finally ran out of luck.  Now at 81 yrs of age the FBI caught him in Santa Monica California at a modest home in a normal neighborhood.  Whitey topped the FBI’s Most Wanted list until 9/11 when he was bumped by Osama Bin Laden.  Found with $800,000 in cash and more guns than any senior citizen needs, his arrest has sent shockwaves throughout Local and National media. After 16 yrs on the run, with 19 bodies hanging over his head and families who have long waited for justice, the questions begin. What does Whitey know? People are already anticipating information flowing freely from Whitey. Families want answers as to their missing loved ones. The People want answers as to how deep the corruption in the FBI and Boston Police goes.  Some others are hoping Whitey will shed some light on the now infamous 1990 Half-Billion Art Heist from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. With Whitey now scheduled to arrive in Boston today at 4pm to face his charges, we will soon find out if Whitey will spill the beans or keep his lips sealed and head off for his final days in Federal Prison.  There are several other states who also want Whitey to stand trial for crimes committed in their states. Florida and Oklahoma both want their shot at prosecuting Whitey, which if it happens could result in far stiffer punishment. Both Florida and Oklahoma are Death Penalty states. So now the question arises: Will the Government Kill Whitey? If you would like your very own Kill Whitey T-Shirt check out our store… mastermerchant.biz
