Welcome to the 2012 “Thangz-2-Do!!”, the monthly e-newsletter providing information of cultural arts (poetry, theatre, comedy, etc.), as well as several other info to keep people in the loop that includes a link for daily Black History facts. (
http://www.yenoba.com), R.I.P. for those that passed away and a B-Day shout-out to those born in June. This time around, “Thangz-2-Do!!” has moved from Yahoo! to G-Mail. Hopefully this will help out a lot easier for folks to view the list of events.
Also, Boston’s longest-running open mic gathering commonly known as VerBaLizAtiOn goes on every 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month, bringing the community some more poetry and stuff. The featured poet on June 12th will be RUDY “RUDACIOUS” CABRERA and “Afro-Cinema” returns to VerB on June 26th for an evening of important films. Our featured film will be “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest”. Details below.
Please mention my name to the promoter of any of these events listed below if and when you do attend one or more.
Enjoy the list and have a blessed day!!
Peace,
VCR

MALCOLM X/ELLA LITTLE-COLLINS HOUSE ANNOUNCEMENT
Join Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Hiastoric Boston Inc. for a
special announcement about the house.
– Malcolm Little’s Roxbury:
Malcolm Little came to Boston as a teenager in the early 1940s to live with his sister Ella Little-Collins and her husband Kenneth. He described Roxbury in the 1964 Autobiography of Malcolm X, co-authored by Alex Haley:
“I didn’t know the world contained as many Negroes as I saw thronging downtown Roxbury at night, especially on Saturdays. Neon lights, nightclubs, pool halls, bars and the cars they drove! Restaurants made the streets smell rich and greasy with down-home Black cooking. Jukeboxes blared Erskine Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Cootie Williams and dozens of others.”
While in Boston, Malcolm held several menial jobs before becoming a street hustler and landing in jail for five years during which he read voraciously and proved to be a talented debater. More significantly, it was in this period that Malcolm converted to the Muslim religious organization the Nation of Islam and, upon his release, rose quickly in the Nation’s leadership.
The Malcolm X – Ella Little-Collins House, built in 1874, is the last known surviving residence of the young Malcolm Little and the family of his older sister, Ella Little-Collins. HBI has partnered with Collins’ son Rodnell to rehabilitate the home and develop living quarters for area graduate students studying African-American history, social justice or human rights.
