Disturbance quelled at Western Mass. jail

Franklin House of Corrections
July 9, 2011

The Franklin County sheriff said yesterday that about a dozen jail inmates refused to enter their cells and started a disturbance that lasted several hours. Sheriff Christopher Donelan said the disturbance in the Greenfield jail started at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday when the inmates started throwing furniture, blankets and other items. They were quelled by the department’s tactical response team at about 1:30 a.m. Friday and were then locked up in other areas of the jail. No one was hurt. The department is reviewing video to determine which inmates were involved and whether charges are warranted. The jail has about 275 inmates. (AP)
