Assault Claim Filed By Staffer On Rep. Evandro Carvalho Campaign Manager
An assault claim filed by newly elected State Rep. Evandro Carvalho’s former Field Director Joao DePina has been the subject of much discussion in the community for the past several days. It all began with a tweet from Joao DePina on May 14th.
Joao DePina (@jdepina12) tweeted at 10:15 AM on Wed, May 14, 2014:
Here everyone has it now. This is just on major reason why I feel he @EvandroforRep is not fit for the job#BosMayor http://t.co/bcW6mrLrGx

The tweet posted a picture of the incident report which indicates that DePina was assaulted on March 27th, 2014 by Hodari Cail who was newly elected Rep. Evandro Carvalho’s Campaign Manager and has been involved with several high profile campaigns. There is a witness to this incident based on the report.
Since then the incident report has now been seen by a wide range of people making the rounds from activists, community members and journalists. Reaction have been mixed from the public at-large. DePina has received mostly support or silence, but there has also been some backlash from those who suggest he should not be airing what happened to him. The report itself indicates a potential “Gay Bashing” incident, whether or not DePina is in fact gay is unclear and unimportant, however it did seem to be a motivating factor in the alleged assault based on the information contained in the report.
DePina has continued to be vocal about the incident even posting his telephone number on facebook for anyone to contact him.
This will be interesting to see how it plays out and the issues arise of how our community views assault, particularly one which may be classified as a “Gay Bashing” incident. The report is in the hands of the Boston Police and if DePina remains vocal he will surely post updates.
