“Violence is a virus”
The City of Boston like any other urban center in America is affected by violence each day. Any community that has been red-lined by banks for over 30 years, left behind in the quality of education offered publicly and faces un-employment at nearly double the rate of the rest of the communities around it will surely face levels of violence at a disproportionate level. These issues are long standing and systemic that must be acknowledged and addressed.
Recently, in your July 6th issue, the Phoenix made a front-page attack against my union’s newspaper, Pax Centurion (the publication of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association), accusing us of baseless, false and scurrilous charges of racism, sexism, and homophobia (“Sh*t Boston Cops Say”).
The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) recently released a report based on a study that concludes every 40 hrs. Black People are killed in the United States by “Police, Security Guards and Self-Appointed Law Enforcers.”
In an article in the Boston Herald dated July 20, 2012, you are quoted as saying, “You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s in the forefront of inclusion”. We agree that any kind of discrimination should be unwelcomed in the City of Boston.
James Carnell, Boston Police Officer and Editor of The Pax Centurion wrote a letter to the editors of The boston Phoenix and specifically, writer Chris Faraone and even mentioned lil’ ole me, Jamarhl Crawford.
After much work from activists, legal professionals, professors and concerned citizens from all across Massachusetts, Gov. Deval Patrick has decided to send the “3 Strikes” bill proposed by the conference committee back to the legislature for more hashing out.
3 Strikes Final Conference Committee Report
I want to thank all my family, friends, colleagues and particularly the community I am privileged to represent who have expressed their support, love, understanding and best wishes during this confusing and upsetting course of events.
I have been accused of some serious charges, these allegations are completely untrue.
I’m glad that Occupy Boston, advertisers and some media are now concerned. However, I find it ironic and indicative of white privilege that there’s a hullabaloo now that some white people from Occupy Boston are offended. In years past, Carnell and also Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association President Thomas “Tom” Nee have espoused views offensive to African-Americans, Africans, Latinos, Muslims, Homosexuals, Women, Immigrants… you get the picture.
