Weekend of violence leaves 6 shot; 1 suspect killed by Police; 179 Shootings Since Boston Marathon

A series of violent shootings this starting at the end of last week left 6 victims with gun shot wounds and 1 suspect dead after a police involved shooting in Broad daylight. According to BPD Boston 24: Crime Data there was 1 non-fatal shooting between Thursday and Friday. There is no further information about that incident at this time. Friday night at around 10:30, two women were shot in a car by the Monument at South and Centre Streets in JP. According to Universal Hub “The women managed to drive down South Street to Metcalf Court before calling 911. Police are looking for two Hispanic men in a gold Stratus, who fired five or six rounds into the women’s car.” The Boston Herald adds A 25-year-old woman in the front passenger seat was transported to Boston Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her right knee, while a 23-year-old woman also in the car was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to her right shoulder, police said. The driver of their car – a 24-year-old man – was uninjured in the attack, according to police. The gunman’s car fled on Center Street, according to investigators. Early Saturday morning around 12:45am according to BPD: an officer from the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) on-sited shots fired while on patrol in the area of Ridgewood Street in Dorchester. While officer was on patrol, he observed two male suspects run out from the area of 29 Ridgewood Street carrying firearms. Officers observed the two suspects brandishing firearms and fleeing in the direction of occupants in a motor vehicle leaving a parking spot. Officers observed both suspects discharged their firearms numerous times at the motor vehicle occupants. The victims of the motor vehicle fled towards Topliff Street. Officers notified operations for assistance. Officers observed the suspects attempt to flee the area. A brief foot chased ensued and both suspects were apprehended in the area of Westville Street at Geneva Avenue and Tonwanda Street. Officers recovered a handgun during the pursuit. The male victim self applied to Boston Medical Center with non- life threatening injuries. Police arrested, Tyshawn Cummings, 18, of Dorchester and Donnelle Joyner, 18, of Dorchester, both are charged with Assault and Battery of Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Discharging Gun 500′ of A Dwelling. Both suspects are expected to be arraigned at Dorchester District Court on Monday, December 9, 2013. More on Universal Hub. A few minutes later there was a drive by shooting that injured 1 on Blue Hill Ave. and Columbia Rd. in Roxbury. Universal Hub reprots the vicitm “was able to get himself to Boston Medical Center.” Saturday afternoon a gun battle errupted on a Dorchester Corner which left 20-year-old Darryl Dookhran, dead after a shootout with police. According to the Globe: Dookhran was killed Saturday afternoon after two plainclothes Boston Police officers stopped him and 26-year-old Dorchester resident Christopher Murrain near Geneva Avenue and Westville Street, Boston Police said Sunday. According to police, Murrain shoved one of the officers and the pair took off running. Dookhran allegedly turned and fired on the officers with a semiautomatic handgun, hitting one in the arm. The officers returned fire, killing Dookhran. Shooting in Roxbury, 1 Arrest – 173 Shootings Since Boston Marathon

According to Universal Hub a man was grazed and a car was struck when someone let off multiple shots in Roxbury Wednesday night: Around 8:30 p.m., somebody unleashed a barrage of gunfire on Munroe Street, near Walnut. Police found one victim with a graze wound to his leg, a car hit by a bullet and numerous shell casings littering the street. A possible suspect was apprehended after a short foot chase down Elmore and Mayfair streets. BPD also report 1 non-fatal shooting in that time period. Later BPD released an update that they made one arrest. BPD report there were three non-fatal shootings this weekend including a double shooting Friday night in Dorchester. More coverage on Universal Hub. 169 Shootings since Boston Marathon

In the past two weeks there have been at least 5 shootings (at least 1 fatal) and numerous stabbings (at least one fatal). Last Friday Nov., 15 there was a drive by shooting on Annunciation road but apparently no one was hit. BPD later arrested three individuals in connection with another shooting near 400 Dudley St. On Saturday Nov. 16, a man was shot near Codman Square in Dorchester. On Sunday there was a double shooting in Dorchester left one victim dead. Upon arrival officer observed two male victims on the ground outside the address suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Boston Medical Center. One of the male victims was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. More on Universal Hub. Then this past Wednesday, Nov. 20, there was a shooting around 2:30 p.m. at 432 Seaver St. according Stanley Staco via Universal Hub. This is most likely the shooting reported in BPD’s Boston: 24 crime data although those reports do not provide specifics of when or where. Community hopes for more dialogue with Mayor Elect Walsh and new commissoner

With the departure of Mayor Thomas Menino and BPD Commissioner Ed Davis there has been much discussion around the legacy these men leave behind and the enduring impact of their time at the helm of our city. While they have received high praise from many there has also been strong criticism from communities that often felt like their voices and concerns were marginalized. In our article “No Reply to Community Meeting Demand on Violence from Menino and Davis” we detail how both the mayor’s and former commissioner’s offices never returned calls from community to meet publicly about public safety and policing, even after over a hundred people rallied on City Hall Plaza to present their ideas and solutions before occupying the mayors office and meeting with staff who assured us they would reply promptly. With Ed Davis having officially left his post and Menino already preparing to pass the reigns to Mayor-elect Martin Walsh, it remains to be seen if Boston’s new mayor will be able to deliver where Menino and Davis failed. Walsh made violence and equity central to his campaign and vowed to unite the city making “one Boston” reality not rhetoric. We only hope he and whomever is appointed as commissioner takes the suggestions and ideas of concerned community members who live this first-hand and not run away from responsibility to these constituents as many feel his predecessors did. According to Boston 24 Crime Stats there was one non-fatal shooting between Wednesday and Thursday and two others over the weekend. We have no further details from the BPD about when and where they occurred however Universal Hub reports the Wednesday shooting took place in Mattapan “around 9:20 p.m. at 9 Elizabeth St.. Days of Violence leave 7 shot in Boston; 161 Shootings Since Boston Marathon

According to BPD Boston: 24 Crime Data from Tuesday and Yesterday, there was one non-fatal shooting between Tuesday and Wednesday and two between Wednesday and Thursday 10 am, one of which was the shooting in Mattpan reported by Universal Hub. Last night, shootings in Mattapan and Roxbury left two people with gunshot wounds. In Mattapan the homicide unit was called in to investigate due to the severity. Early this morning a double shooting in the South End at W. Newton and Tremont streets left two more wounded around 2:15 am. This makes the total number of shootings in Boston (where people were hit, fatal and non-fatal) at least 161 since the Boston Marathon and out of that at least 20 people died from their wounds. This marks the 6th gun murder and 61st shooting since the Blackstonian and participants in the ‘Rally For Solutions’ held at city hall presented suggestions and demanded a community meeting with the Mayor and Police Commissioner to address public concerns about policing and public safety. There have been no response from the Mayors office to at least 5 phone calls and numerous emails, tweets and other correspondence. Today marks Ed Davis’s last day on the job as Boston’s Police Commissioner. He leaves his post has still not having addressed these citizen concerns about BPD response to violence and public safety. According to BPD Boston 24: Crime Data there were 2 Shootings between 10AM on Thursday and 10AM Friday. While they do not provide any information on when or where these incidents took place, we know 1one of them is the 1:50 am shooting in East Boston early Friday. Another Shooting in East Boston; 152 Shootings Since Boston Marathon

According to Universal Hub: “Stanley Stacos reports a man was shot around 1:50 a.m. outside the Cabana Grill, 254 Bennington St.” This makes the total number of shootings in Boston (where people were hit, fatal and non-fatal) at least 152 since the Boston Marathon and out of that at least 20 people died from their wounds. This marks the 6th gun murder and 52nd shooting since the Blackstonian and participants in the ‘Rally For Solutions’ held at city hall presented suggestions and demanded a community meeting with the Mayor and Police Commissioner to address public concerns about policing and public safety.
