Police Shootout with Suspect on Seaver St.

According to Universal Hub, a man who was about to be questioned by BPD around 1 a.m. in Puddingstone Park on Seaver Street about an alleged drug transaction early Friday morning ran from officers and “when cornered, fired a round at two pursuing officers, who then returned fire, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office says.” Neither the officers nor the suspect who has been identified as Anthony Toombs, 21 were injured in the exchange of shots which took place the DA’s office says. According to the DA’s office: Members of the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force were engaged in a gang investigation when they observed an apparent drug transaction near the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Pasadena Road at about 12:50 a.m. As the officers watched, a man later identified as Toombs approached the seller in that transaction. As officers surveilled them, the two entered Stash’s Pizza and, a short time later, began walking up Blue Hill Avenue. Officers approached them in an unmarked cruiser. Two officers, both wearing badges outside their clothing and one of them wearing a vest marked “Boston Police,” exited the vehicle and asked if they could speak to the men. The man believed to be the seller in the earlier transaction stopped; Toombs began to run. The DA’s office continues that after the exchange of gunfire: Toombs allegedly tossed the gun over the fence and went to the ground. He complied with orders to show officers his hands, but allegedly struggled with another officer who attempted to place him in custody. Toombs is charged with assaulting that officer with his fist. Additional officers recovered the gun Toombs allegedly used, a Hi-Point Model C-9 9mm semiautomatic loaded with 8 rounds of ammunition. Again from Universal Hub “Dorchester District Court Judge Jonathan Tynes agreed with a request from prosecutors to set bail at $750,000 on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, unlawfully discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a public employee, resisting arrest and trespassing.” Source: http://www.universalhub.com/crime/20130816-boston-cops-shot-again.html

Police shootout with suspect in Dorchester

BPD report an officer fired at a suspect who refused to drop his gun when police arrived at a gun at Kingsdale and Wales streets around 12:45 a.m. where “suspect/s [were] actively shooting.” Officers chased the suspect who was still in possession of the firearm. At the Intersection of Kingsdale and Wales Street officers encountered the same male suspect, ordered him to stop and drop his firearm. The male suspect repeatedly refused to comply with the officers directives. At least one officer discharged his weapon. There were no injuries in relation to this incident. The suspect Michael Coke, 38, of Roxbury, was apprehended. Coke is charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm and Firearm Discharged Within 500 Feet of Dwelling. Coke is expected in Dorchester District Court. Additional charges are pending. According to Universal Hub “He was ordered held in lieu of $200,000 bail at his arraignment in Dorchester District Court today, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office reports.” The DA’s office adds: Coke was additionally charged as an armed career criminal based on prior convictions for unlawful firearm possession in 1997 and 2008 and prior convictions for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in 2001 and 2008. Again from Universal Hub “Coke survived getting shot in a separate incident on Greenwood Street this past spring.” Stanley Staco reports police were looking for a red, four-door Honda that raced away from the scene. This comes just six days after a shootout in Dorchester that left one suspect dead and two officers injured.

Double Shooting in South End; At least 108 Shootings since Boston Marathon

Universal Hub reports two people were shot on Lenox St. near Shawmut Ave. Sunday at around 11:30 pm. Police found one victim on Lenox with a gunshot wound to the back. A second victim showed up at Boston Medical Center shortly after. Police are searching for two vehicles: A gray compact with a Zipcar logo on the side, last seen turning onto Tremont Street inbound (which officers may have stopped on Mass. Ave.) and a BMW, Mass. plates CL3 666, whose driver dropped off the second victim at the hospital, then drove away. Officers were warned to treat the occupants of that car as armed and dangerous. According to BPD’s Boston 24: report there were 3 non-fatal shootings over the weekend leaving one shooting unaccounted for. There was a report of 2 non-fatal shootings between last wednesday and thursday but it is unclear wether this is the same incident as the officer-involved shooting which left two officers with minor gunshot wounds to the legs and one suspect dead. This makes the total number of shootings in Boston (where people were hit, fatal and non-fatal) at least 108 since the Boston Marathon. According to Boston Police Crime stats, as of July 23, non-fatal shootings since the beginning of 2013 are up 16% over last year and homicides with a firearm are up 64%. Gun Battle Leaves 2 Police Shot, 1 Suspect Dead; Manhunt for Other Suspect Shuts Down Dorchester

UPDATE: The Second Suspect has been apprehended and identified as Donta Lewis. The Herald reports police found him in a crawl space in his girlfriend’s house. Yesterday at approximately 1:47 pm, according to BPD tweets and reports, officers from C-11 District in Dorchester responded to a radio call of a person shot in the are of 1500 Dorchester Avenue. It is unclear whether this shooting was part of, or was what initiated the police action that resulted in the death of one suspect and minor shooting injuries to two officers. A later report identified the suspect who died as 20 year old Roudy Hendricks of Brockton. The Globe reports that two officers from the drug unit were working undercover in the area. The Herald adds that officers Harry Jean and Terry Cotton were “running surveillance in an unrelated matter about 2 p.m. when they spotted Hendricks and the other suspect at Dorchester Avenue and Shepton Street.” The BPD allege that the plainclothes officers approached the two suspects and Hendricks opened fire on them while the other suspect “started to move his clothing as if he had a gun,” Commissioner Ed Davis said. It was not clear whether the second suspect had a gun, but police are assuming he does for now. The search for the second suspect saw parts of Dorchester Ave. and the MBTA service in the area shut down for a time. Commissioner Davis did not offer an explanation as to why the officers approached the two men, only that the incident is under investigation and that “something about the two suspects drew their attention.” Police had earlier described the two suspects as being in a “confrontation.” At the press conference Davis  said “This is the second time in a week or so that we’ve had officers violently attacked by individuals who have no regard for the officers’ safety, and I think it’s a troubling trend,” referencing the shooting of a Middlesex sheriff’s deputy last week at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary where the suspect was shot in the chest after getting hold of an officers weapon and  shooting a deputy. “But the officers are trained well and all indications are they did exactly what they are supposed to do when they are attacked like this” Davis Said. As with every officer involved shooting, Suffolk DA Dan Conley’s office will be investigating the incident. Hendircks was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. BPD Commissioner Ed Davis said: “This individual has a lengthy and violent record” which the Herald reported includes a June 2010 bust for gun possession. Friends and classmates of Hendricks interviewed by the Globe were surprised. Tarahn Maxwell, 19, said he was a “class clown” in high school. “He wouldn’t have done this without being provoked,” he said. “He was just hanging around with the wrong people,” said another classmate, Malika Austin, 20. The broad daylight shootout and resulting investigation and search left many residents shaken and asking for answers. VIEW PHOTOS from the Boston Globe

At least 105 Shootings since Boston Marathon

Earlier yesterday, as we prepared for our “Rally for Solutions” yesterday at City Hall Plaza to address violence in the city, an article by Steve Annear for the Boston Magazine detailed the purpose of the rally. It gave a count of 104 shootings since the Boston Marathon based on stats from the BPD. While we still lack the specific details to add these shootings to our map we can confirm and include them in our list. BPD 2013 Shootings Overview (PDF) BPD 5 Year Shootings Overview (PDF) There was another report of a non-fatal shooting between yesterday morning and this morning. While there is some data available, one challenge to keeping an accurate count of something like the shootings in the city has been not having access to consistent and detailed data from city and police about crime in the city, especially recent crimes. We are encouraged by efforts like the Boston Crime Incident Reports Database and are working to make that information more accessible and usable to the community. This makes the total number of shootings in Boston (where people were hit, fatal and non-fatal) at least 105 since the Boston Marathon. According to Boston Police Crime stats, as of July 23, non-fatal shootings since the beginning of 2013 are up 16% over last year and homicides with a firearm are up 64%. Rally for Solutions on City Hall Plaza – Report Back

Yesterday, as many of you who joined us know, the Blackstonian organized a “Rally for Solutions” at City Hall Plaza to address violence in the city. We were motivated by our count of the shootings since the Boston Marathon passing the tragic milestone of 100 since April 15, 2013. Over 100 people joined us to offer their support, express their concern for this issue and present solutions to city government, law enforcement and the community at large. Present were members of Voices of Liberation, Organize the Hood Boston, 10,000 Strong Boston, BloodSkinLand Productions, Young Gifted and Black Movement, Grassroots Grind Group, Pen & Sword Political Pirates, Greatest Minds, National Black College Alliance, Mothers for Justice and Equality and many more community organizations as well as concerned citizens of all ages, races, ethnicities, denominations and sexual orientations. There were several elected officials who were in attendance including City Councilor Charles C. Yancey who participated in the speaking program along with Minister Kim Odom and others, adding their solutions to those presented and documented in the video below. Following the rally, a group of 47 of us remained to go to the mayors office and demand (again) a public meeting with Mayor Menino and BPD Commissioner Ed Davis where the community can present their ideas and concerns about violence and policing. A member of the Mayor’s staff informed us the Mayor was out but assured us she would relay the message. We have since reiterated the demand in writing and included the ideas presented in the video below: Photos from the event can be seen on the Blackstonian Facebook page. The event was covered by Boston Magazine and The Boston Globe. Excerpt from Community Will ‘Rally For Solutions’ After 100 Reported Shootings Since Marathon by Steve Annear Residents are calling on members of the community to come together in a show of unity on the steps of City Hall to seek solutions to the ongoing gun violence in Boston, after the shooting toll since April 15 recently reached 100 incidents and counting. “This is a rally for solutions—we are trying to get a real platform for real ideas and policies, not just rallying about the violence that has long been ignored,” said activist Jamarhl Crawford, publisher and editor of the website Blackstonian.com. Crawford said there is a drastic disparity between what happens to black and Latino people, and what happens to “white counterparts” in terms of how people react to violence in Boston, and that Monday’s rally is meant to put the spate of violence on the forefront of peoples’ minds by using the “sad, sick milestone” of the 100-plus shootings to highlight the “devaluation” of the lives of people in the urban community. “For some reason, black and Latino life in the urban city environment is devalued. There are ‘abnormal’ acts of violence, and that’s what gets attention, as with my community, however, [violence is] almost expected. It’s become ‘normalized,’” he said. “I want people to see we are regular people too. If you prick us do we not bleed?” The “Rally For Solutions” will begin at 3 p.m. at Government Center, and last roughly two hours, highlighting the notion that “no life [is] worth more than another and one life lost is too many.”
