At least 105 Shootings since Boston Marathon
Earlier yesterday, as we prepared for our “Rally for Solutions” yesterday at City Hall Plaza to address violence in the city, an article by Steve Annear for the Boston Magazine detailed the purpose of the rally. It gave a count of 104 shootings since the Boston Marathon based on stats from the BPD. While we still lack the specific details to add these shootings to our map we can confirm and include them in our list. While there is some data available, one challenge to keeping an accurate count of something like the shootings in the city has been not having access to consistent and detailed data from city and police about crime in the city, especially recent crimes. We are encouraged by efforts like the Boston Crime Incident Reports Database and are working to make that information more accessible and usable to the community. This makes the total number of shootings in Boston (where people were hit, fatal and non-fatal) at least 105 since the Boston Marathon. According to Boston Police Crime stats, as of July 23, non-fatal shootings since the beginning of 2013 are up 16% over last year and homicides with a firearm are up 64%.
